Teach Your 2nd Graders How to Represent Numbers: 6 Engaging Activities that Stick!

Helping second graders understand how to represent numbers in different ways is one of the most important (and fun!) parts of early math instruction. When students can show numbers in standard form, expanded form, word form, and using visual models, they begin to develop deep number sense and strong place value understanding.

Why Should 2nd Graders Understand the Different Ways to Represent Numbers?

Before diving into activities, let’s quickly review why this skill is so critical. Representing number in multiple forms helps second graders:

  • Understand place value and number structure
  • Develop flexibility in thinking about numbers
  • Prepare for multi-digit addition, subtraction, and comparing
  • Build confidence in reading and writing numbers up to 1,200 and beyond

When students learn to move between number forms easily, it strengthens their math foundation for years to come!

Activity #1: Match the Number–Standard, Expanded, Word Form

One of the most effective ways to help students recognize different number forms is through a simple matching game. In this printable center, students match three cards: the standard form, expanded form, and word form of a number.

  • Math centers
  • Partner work
  • Early finishers
  • Small group intervention

Tip: Have students explain their matches aloud using place value language: “I matched 427 because it’s 400+20+7 and it says ‘four hundred twenty-seven.'”


Activity #2: Build Numbers With Base-Ten Blocks

Place value makes so much more sense when students can see it and build it. Using real or printable base-ten blocks, students select a number card and construct it using hundreds, tens, and ones. This hands-on approach helps students connect visual models to abstract forms. Then, they write the number in all three forms on their recording sheet.


Activity #3: Spin the Digits, Then Create the Number

Want to make number representation feel like a game? The “Spin and Represent” activity in the resource gives students a random number to represent in different ways. Students spin a number. Then they complete the numbers shown in:

  • Standard form
  • Expanded form
  • Word form
  • Base-ten drawing

This game is ideal for small group instruction, independent practice, partner work, or math centers. Plus, it’s easy to differentiate by choosing the appropriate spinner for each student!


Activity #4: Have Students Work at Locating Numbers on Number Lines

Help students make sense of number size and order with open number lines. In this activity, students place their number on a blank number line and label intervals in tens. Example: To represent 348, students might jump from 300 > 340 > 348 using tens and ones. Why it works:

  • Reinforces skip counting
  • Encourages number reasoning
  • Connects to mental math strategies

Activity #5: Use Number Sorts to Create Different Ways to Represent Numbers

This quick and powerful activity gives students multiple number forms to sort into categories.

  • Standard form
  • Expanded form
  • Word form
  • Base-ten Picture

Students can even create their own cards to sort, which deepens understanding and ownership of the concept. You can use this activity as: a quick warm-up, formative assessment, or a collaborative partner challenge.

Activity #6: Have Students Represtent “The Number of the Day” on a Workmat and Review Place Value Using Styrofoam Cups

Using workmats to represent “Number of the Day” can be a fun activity for your students that is easily differentiated! Start with smaller numbers, then progress to larger numbers as the year goes on.

If you prefer a more hands-on activity, use styrofoam cups with number values on them to practice representing numbers. They are also easily differentiated! Write the first digit in the number on the rim of the cup, then follow the number with as many zeros as you choose. My students have LOVED both of these activities every year, so I am sharing a copy of the templates with you. I hope you enjoy using them in your classroom!
