Using gingerbread-themed activities to teach fractions to second

When practicing partitioning whole objects into equal parts, how about sorting fraction cookies!

You decide the level of difficulty for your students in this game/center. Students identify shapes that are partitioned into fractions and sort them according to type.

Just pull out the cookie sheets and fraction cookies that you want them to practice. Add more difficult fractions as your students’ understanding progresses!

Teaching Tips for Gingerbread Fractions

• Use Manipulatives: Using active, hands-on materials lets students become physically engaged with the skill.

• Encourage Math Talk: Ask students to explain how they know each part is equal, why smaller parts require more piecesm, or how they determined which shapes show halves, fourths, sixths, or eighths. This math talk builds critical thinking. You can even have your students write about what they have learned while working with fractions.

• Scaffold the Skills: Begin with impler partitions like halves, and gradually introduce fourths and eighths. Use visual to compare sizes of the fractional parts and help students see how increasing the number of parts changes each part’s size.
