Engaging Place Value Activities for 2nd Grade

Place Value Activities Are An Essential Part of 2nd Grade Math

Setting up place value activities in your 2nd grade classroom can lead to some powerful review time! Place value is one of those must-have math skills that sets the stage for everything else. When kids really get how numbers work — like how a 5 in the hundreds place is totally different from a 5 in the ones place — it helps them with everything from simple addition to more advanced math down the road. That’s why place value activities are so important to provide that deeper understanding.

Place Value Tubs Can Help Students Practice Skills In a Hands-On Way!

One super effective (and fun!) way to teach place value is by using place value tubs in the classroom. Fill them with hands-on tools like base ten blocks, number cards, and place value cards. When kids can see and touch the numbers, it all starts to click. They begin to understand that digits have different values depending on where they are in a number — and that’s a big deal!

Working in groups can make place value activities even more meaningful. When students team up, they get to talk through their thinking, share strategies, and help each other make sense of tricky concepts. Sometimes they explain things to each other in ways we wouldn’t even think of! Plus, it’s a great way to build teamwork and communication skills while keeping math fun and collaborative.

Just Print, Prep, and Go! Get Your Place Value Tubs Up and Running:

  1. Print out the tub cards, place value markers, and skills tracker sheet.
  2. Laminate the cards for durability, put them on a ring, and pop them into a tub filled with your favorite math manipulatives.
  3. Fill out your students’ names on the skills tracker sheet. I use a simple (+ or – ) system to track whether a student has mastered a skill or needs more practice.

There are 12 sets of tub activity cards included in this place value set, and each one builds on the last. The skills covered are:

  • ✅ Using models to compose numbers
  • ✅ Using standard and word form to represent numbers
  • ✅ Generating a number that is greater than or less than a given whole number
  • ✅ Using place value to compare and order numbers
  • ✅ Generating a number that is 10 or 100 more or less
  • ✅ Generating the missing number in a sequence

These activities aren’t just a one-and-done! You can use them all year long and set them up in different ways. Create tubs with base ten blocks, place value disks, linking cubes, or really any small manipulatives you have on hand. The list goes on and on! You can even run multiple tubs at the same time with different tools to keep things fresh and hands-on.

The best part? The difficulty increases gradually across the sets, so you can differentiate with ease. Plus, some cards have blank spaces so you can fill in your own numbers to meet your students right where they are.
